From the University of Chicago Poetry Club to the Santa Fe Movement, Yvor Winters, EX 1921, found a deep connection between modernist free verse and Native American songs: the “immediacy” to the poet of “all phenomena, personal or objective.” Winters’s own poetry was shaped by a philosophy of perception and moral judgement that developed over the course of a lifetime.
