1989

Before the Medici moved to 1327 E. 57th Street in 1989, the restaurant was about two blocks to the east at 57th and Blackstone (most recently home to Caffe Florian). The earlier spot, of course, served the classic Medici Garbage Pizza, topped with sausage, ground beef, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, fresh mushrooms, green peppers, and onions. In the 1980s a large Garbage Pizza was $13.85; in 2012 it’s $21.95.

1960

“Sturdily built,” “hand-crafted, “jet black with gold trim”: the descriptions of the University of Chicago captain’s chair have stayed mostly the same over the years, but the same can’t be said about the price. At $30 in 1960, the chair three decades later had jumped more than 600 percent to $225. Today the chair—“hand crafted with a laser engraved school seal”—costs almost five Benjamins.
