Arrested development

Tagging along with Occupy Chicago participant Kelvin Ho, ’12, at a protest against entitlement cuts.

“There’s a bunch of senior citizens who want to get arrested today,” Kelvin Ho, ‘12, told me at a November 7 rally in Chicago’s Federal Plaza. Hundreds of people had gathered that morning outside Senators Dick Durbin’s and Mark Kirk’s offices to protest Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid cuts. An active member of the Occupy Chicago movement, Ho was documenting the rally for Occupy Chicago’s live feed.

After the rally, where Durbin expressed his opposition to program cuts, the protestors marched to the intersection of Jackson and Clark, where more than 40 people blocked traffic by sitting or standing in the middle of the street. This video (see left) shows the start of the arrests, where police tap members on the shoulders and line them up with their hands behind their backs. At least 15 of the 43 arrested were members of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus, which organized the protest.
